In Spring of 2024 the Blue Lake Rancheria Agency’s PathMaker Mobile Technician Lisa K. Hoffman and Career Readiness Education Coordinator Korby Skoglund were requested to join our partners at Hoopa Elementary to present at their annual Fish Fair. We did a short presentation about our recent field trip to visit the Copco Dam site. 3 months prior, the Copco Dam was drained as part of the collaborative efforts with the Yurok Fisheries Department. We shared our experience there, emphasizing the importance and significance in restoring habitats for salmon to return home.
Images of various fish relative to the Klamath River were printed on cardstock, giving several opportunities for students to water color, ink, or use modeling clay. The students created stories about the fish they chose, whether it was from a story from their community, a fishing trip or imagination. Our goal was not only to emphasize the importance of the restoration, but to foster a welcoming place to be creative and inquisitive learners.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Hoopa Elementary Fish Fair Coordinators Kira Burnett and Maya Williams as well as Event Program Managers LeRoy and Teresa Cyr.
